Activity: Build a DNA Model
a
(pieces p.8)
Instructions
1. Color code the key with the
parts of the nucleotide: phosphate,
deoxyribose sugar, and the 4
bases (Adenine, Thymine,
Cytosine, Guanine). Color the
nucleotide parts using the same
colors.
2. Cut out each of the nucleotides
using the dashed lines as a guide.
Arrange them in the box at right
pairing A-T and G-C. You will
have one set left over. Going up
and down, you can put them in
any order.
3. To match the pairs, one of the
nucleotides must be arranged
upside down. This is intended.
The sides of the DNA double
helix are arranged antiparallel.
4. See p. 9 for finished model
example. Take a picture and
upload to canvas.
Questions:
1. What 3 parts make up a
nucleotide?
2. Which bases pair together?
3. How many strands in DNA?
4. Write the base sequence of
your two strands for the piece of
DNA that you have built.
